Urban Forestry:

Over the past decade, the view of the urban forest has changed. This is due to international research and recognition that we need to develop healthy communities. Only a few years ago, trees were considered the only element needed by communities, and it was primarily for their beauty. We understand how, as the dominate plant feature of urban landscapes, trees are the most influential component of the urban landscape.

Our Future:

Marin’s urban forest is in crisis! Our wild forests reach down into our cities and therefore we are lulled into thinking our health is protected. Yet in our industrial areas there is street after street without trees or other landscape. Our cities and communities have abandoned street trees to property owners. Trees are topped for views leaving dangerous conditions, when removing the offending tree and replanting a lower species may be less expensive and more productive for the future. Professional installation of municipal and community landscapes are not lending themselves to sustainability. Trees are wasted as chips or for fire. Creeks have been rendered dirty and lifeless.

Help us seek solutions for the above problems, to work with government agencies and support public education. The future of our Urban Forest is in our hands. Let’s make it better than it is today for ourselves and tomorrow for our children.
