Citizens for Sustainable Urban Forestry

American Forests' (Site Map) Strategy for achieving their mission is to provide action opportunities to targeted audiences to enable them to improve their environment with trees. We do this by using the best science to identify conservation issues, then develop and market practical solutions that individuals and groups can apply. American Forests' targeted audiences are individuals, community groups, government at all levels, educators, and businesses.

California Oak Foundation Founded in 1988, the California Oak Foundation (COF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization committed to preserving the state's oak forest ecosystem and its rural landscapes. COF advocates for curbing urban sprawl and creating livable cities. COF's programs include: Working with landowners, ranchers, farmers, developers, conservation organizations, estate planners and others to conserve oak woodlands, mitigate losses of biodiversity, plan responsibly for the urbanization pressures in California, and protect the State's critical watersheds and wildlife habitat. Educating children to be responsible stewards of California's oak woodlands by providing curriculum to educators; developing the oak component of the Cal Alive! CD-ROM series for youth; publishing and distributing a new curriculum entitled Investigating the Oak Community aimed at children in grades 4 through 8.Enabling community members to work on local oak conservation issues by providing technical assistance, scientific and resource information, press and community outreach guidelines, and testimony.Advocating for responsible planning at the state, regional and local levels. Conducting ongoing public information programs through symposia, workshops and an extensive schedule of personal appearances and electronic outreach.

California Oak Mortality Task Force (COMTF) focuses on the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, which can have devastating effects in the wildlands it inhabits and has had substantial impacts on the nursery industry internationally. In 14 coastal California counties and Curry County, Oregon, P. ramorum has caused outbreaks of Sudden Oak Death, killing tens of thousands of native oak and tanoak trees. The pathogen also infects the leaves and twigs of common ornamental nursery plants, such as rhododendrons and camellias, which serve as vectors for pathogen dispersal.

California ReLeaf is a statewide campaign to expand, enhance, and preserve urban and community forests -- making our cities and communities more livable, improving the global environment, and connecting people to the land and to each other. Founded in 1989, California ReLeaf is an urban forestry program of the National Tree Trust.

California Tree Failure Reporting Program (CTFRP) was established in 1987 to collect quantitative information on the mechanical failure of urban trees (trunk breaks, branch breaks, and uprootings). This information is used to develop "failure profiles" for genera and species to more accurately assess failure probability in standing trees and thereby reduce failure potential in urban forests.Over 200 tree care professionals in California are cooperating in this effort by systematically inspecting fallen trees, or tree parts and reporting failure details for entry into the CTRFP database. To date (October 14, 2004) 3886 failure reports have been filed.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company is dedicating five million dollars to this effort over five years (approximately 2000-2004). This project is intended to create greater public awareness about the safety issues concerning proper tree selection and vegetation placement near electric power lines.
